What Does a Gas Safety Inspection Involve?

A commercial Gas Safety Certificate (CP12) confirms that your gas appliances have been inspected by a qualified professional and are safe to use. In the UK, businesses are legally required to have their gas appliances checked every 12 months by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

During an inspection, the engineer will:

  • Carry out a visual examination of all gas appliances.
  • Conduct pressure and functionality tests to ensure everything is operating correctly.
  • Check ventilation and extraction systems to confirm they are removing harmful gases safely.
  • Assess pipework and connections for signs of leaks or damage.

Once all checks are complete, and your appliances meet safety standards, you will receive your Gas Safety Certificate, confirming compliance with UK regulations.

Signs You May Have a Gas Appliance Issue

Before we go into more detail about gas safety and compliance, here are some early warning signs to look out for:

  • Unusual smells – Do you notice the distinct odour of gas in your premises?
  • Yellow or orange flames – Instead of a steady blue flame, do your gas appliances produce an unusual colour?
  • Inefficient performance – Are your appliances taking longer than usual to heat up or failing to work properly?
  • Soot or staining – Are there dark marks or signs of scorching around your gas appliances?
  • Frequent pilot light failures – Is your boiler or other gas equipment constantly needing to be relit?

Ensuring your commercial gas appliances are safe and working efficiently is essential for the smooth operation of your business. Faulty gas appliances can not only disrupt your daily operations but also pose serious safety risks, including gas leaks and carbon monoxide exposure. That’s why regular inspections and maintenance are crucial to keeping your workplace safe and compliant with UK regulations.

The sooner you detect an issue with your gas system, the better. If you suspect a fault, it’s important to have it inspected and resolved as quickly as possible to avoid potential hazards and costly repairs.
